SmartHunt Tips, Tools and Techniques
|
| Resumes' How to write a basic
resume' that works! |
- Keep your resume' to one page. Reviewers typically spend only 30-60
seconds scanning a resume'. A resume' that is poorly organized or too
wordy will be overlooked. Use simple, easy to read fonts, it is OK to
use bold type for headings only, no italics or fancy lettering, these
distract from the content. No pictures! Use the standard format we suggest,
busy employers won't take the time to hunt around for specific information.
- Begin with your Personal Information at the top of the page. Centered
is preferred. Include your complete name, use your middle name if you
have one. Your complete mailing address, spell out Street, Drive, Avenue
etc Your city, state and Zip Code Your home telephone number (don't
forget the area code!) Your cell phone number Your email address Your
fax number (if you have one) **If you have a personal Web site, mention
it only if it is applicable to the position you are applying for.
|
| CAREER OBJECTIVE |
- Emphasise what you have to offer. For example: "To utilize my education
and experience in Retail Management for the best interest of your Company.
" **Keep your Objective brief and precise. It is appropriate, depending
on the position you are applying for, in some cases to say "... to our
best mutual advantage" but be careful, most employers are interested
in what you can do for them***
|
| EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE: |
- List your employment history with the most recent job first. Company
Name, Location, Job Title, Dates of Employment. (month/year) If still
there, say, "Currently Employed" Brief Job Description: Choose your
words carefully, emphasise parts of the job which relate to the one
you are applying for, even if they were not a major part. Be sure to
include special projects, such as, "compiled weekly newsletter, or published
annual Placement Report". Also include any Supervisory duties, even
if only one part time person. Use aggressive ( "Managed, Supervised,
Coordinated, etc)words in your description, be to the point and brief
as possible. You want the reviewer to be interested enough to want to
know more about you, they will not take the t time to read a long description.
And remember, you need to stick to one page!
|
| SKILLS/ACTIVITIES |
- Here is where you list your basic skills and equipment/software that
you are familiar with. (Type 70 wpm, Microsoft Word and Excell, etc.)
Don't forget to mention any foreign languages you are familiar with.
List here any professional organizations you belong to or Volunteer
for. You may also list your personnal hobbies, with caution. For example,
" Little League Soccor Coach" shows that you are a community minded
person, family oriented, well rounded etc. Stating that you are a heavy
metal music fan may not be appropriate for some jobs! However, stating
that you play the clarinet, may be a good ice breaker for the intreview.
|
| EDUCATION |
|
- Start with your most recent education first. List your Degree, (or
number or\ years attended), your Major, Minor and the years of attendence.
Next list the name, city and state of the school. Do not list your GPA,
but do mention any honors you received. Ex: Graduated Summa Cum Laude,
etc.
|
| REFERENCES: |
- It is standard acceptable practice to state that "References will
be provided upon request" **Before you declare it finished: Proof Read
carefully, better yet, have someone else read it , check for clarity,
NO TYPOS and easy to read. Create several versions of your resume',
tailored for each different type of position you apply for.
|
| COVER LETTERS |
- Your cover letter should introduce yourself in a more personal way
than your resume' The emphasis of your letter should be to state why
you are interested in that particiular job, you can mention your availability
and willingness to re-locate if appropriate. . Do some research on the
companies you apply for and put something in your cover letter to let
the reviewer know that you know a little about them. Be precise and
brief, no more than 3 paragraphs, never more than one page. Use a standard
business format:

salary requirements in your resume; You can mention a salary range requirement
in your cover letter. If you do not have a specific requirement, state
that the salary requirement is negotiable. This is especially important
when respondig to an ad which requests salary information. It is in
your best interest to tell them!
